My Southern California installation stops at around 90% with a MoveFile failed; code 82 Error

This error occurs on the initial release of Volume 1: Southern California This error has been corrected and will not occur on any Volume 1 purchased after 22 September 2003. If you purchase before 22 September 2003 and get this error the solution is detailed below.

Error
We tested MegaScenery's installation on a number of systems with different operating and file system combinations. While in all our testing we did not encounter any errors we have discovered that in rare instances some users may receive the following error on installation:

Cause

This error occurs on systems running Windows XP that is still running the FAT32 file system. This configuration is found on systems that were upgraded from Windows 98 and Me to Windows XP. When you upgrade from the previous versions of Windows to XP the file system is not automatically converted to NTFS (NT File System) but instead remains as a FAT32 file system.

While our installer uses standard Windows File Copy APIs, if you have the above configuration i.e. Windows XP/FAT32 you may experience the above error. The glitch is a Windows glitch and we are uncertain of the specific cause at this time. We believe it is due to some limitations with Windows XP and the FAT32 file system. Windows XP can only format a FAT32 drive to 32Gb and there could be an inherent limitation or potential for file operation errors in FAT32 drives greater than 32Gb under Windows XP. A legacy of the 98/Me to XP upgrade. MegaScenery installs 58,000 files and therefore the chance of an error being manifested is greater.

The bottom line is that if you are running Windows XP you should be running NTFS file system. Any computer expert will advise you of the same unless you have some rare instances of software that will not run on a FAT32 file system.

We also suggest that you follow the links at the bottom of this section for some advice on setting up your hard disk for flight simulation.

Solution(s)

You can follow the procedure below to upgrade your file system to the better and more sophisticated NTFS you will then be able to install MegaScenery with the current installer. Alternately, if you do not want to convert to NTFS and need FAT32 for legacy applications then you can request a new set of MegaScenery SoCal disks to be sent to you by mail. Note, you must be a registered user so if you haven't registered your product then please complete your product registration then come back here to request the replacement installer here.

Option 1
If you have a second hard drive or partition that is already formatted with NTFS then you can install MegaScenery on this drive. It doesn't matter where you install MegaScenery to. The installer will set-up the appropriate pointers in Flight Simulator so you can have Flight Simulator on your C: drive and MegaScenery on your D drive.

Option 2
If you DON'T have a second hard drive or partition that is already formatted with NTFS then follow the procedure below.

Step 1. Update Windows. We suggest that you first try updating your Windows XP with the most recent Service Pack (Service Pack 1) and all Critical Updates using the Windows Update feature of Windows XP. When you have completed this step, attempt to reinstall MegaScenery. If MegaScenery installs then you are good to go however if you still encounter the installation error then proceed with Step 2 below.

If Step 1 fixes your problem then you will not need to proceed with Step 2. There are benefits however, to your overall computer system by converting your FAT32 file system to the more sophisticated NTFS as outlined in Step 2.

Step 2. Convert your file system to NTFS. It will resolve this problem and give you a better more powerful file system for your general use anyway. This can be done from within Windows XP through the Command Prompt using the Convert command..

Steps:

IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU PROCEED IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT XP USERS HAVE ALL OF THE WINDOWS CRITICAL UPDATES INSTALLED BEFORE YOU CONVERT TO NTFS AS THIS COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM UNBOOTABLE. SO PLEASE PERFORM THIS IMPORTANT STEP FIRST.

CAUTION: You are performing a conversion that changes your hard drive's file system. Any time any major hard disk conversion of any kind is done, there is some risk of losing data. Please backup ALL of your important data before performing this procedure. We also advise that you consult the Windows Help and Support center for the "Convert" command and become familiar with it before proceeding. Note this is NOT a reformat but instead a file system conversion.

1. Confirm that your Hard Drive is FAT32 by selecting My Computer and right-clicking on the drive to which you are trying to install MegaScenery. Select Properties and Under the General Tab it will indicate which file system you are using. It will, if you are experiencing this problem, indicate FAT32. Please also note your drive volume name as the conversion may ask for this name. It may be blank if your volume does not have a name. The illustration below shows NTFS but your system will likely show FAT32

2. Go to Command Prompt:

START=>ALL PROGRAMS=>ACCESSORIES=>COMMAND PROMPT

3. When ready enter the following command:

CONVERT C: /fs:ntfs

In this instance we are converting C: drive however if you wish to convert a different drive then replace the C: above with D: or E: or whatever drive letter you wish to convert. Ensure the the colon : is after the drive letter.

Answer NO to the question about dismounting the volume and answer YES to the next question about scheduling the conversion when the system starts next. Then restart your system and the file conversion will begin.

The process takes around 15-30 minutes depending upon the speed of your system and size of your hard drive.

After the conversion process is complete then you should be able to install MegaScenery.

Please note that there are many other benefits of converting to a NTFS. NTFS is a more advanced file system and overall faster, especially when tweaked.

I have a "Blue Line" in my scenery that is visible in the distance between Long Beach & Mt Wilson

You are not seeing things. This line is there and is visible in the lower resolution images in the distance. This line is there as a result of a problem with the Flight Simulator Terrain Engine and occurs with 3rd party textures/tiles (which is what MegaScenery is). The developers have created a fix for this and it included in the version 1.3 download for Volume 1: Southern California. You can download that patch by CLICKING HERE.

Some Airports have buildings on the runway

This error has been corrected and will not occur on any product purchased after 22 September. For those who purchased before 22 September the solution is detailed below.

This is a result of some inaccuracies in the autogen that was installed by MegaScenery. You can correct this by downloading this patch.

You will need to unzip this patch and then run the executable.

To download the patch Right Click Here
(Select "Save As" to download the Autogen Patch. 3.5 Mb)

MegaScenery Does Not Show Up Under GO TO AIRPORT - Search Add-On Scenery

That's right MegaScenery will NOT show up under Search Add-On Scenery. MegaScenery becomes part of the default scenery so that all you need to do is select an airport that is in the MegaScenery area e.g. Los Angeles International. MegaScenery will then load as you select an airport that is included in the area.

My "Full Kit" version of Los Angeles and San Diego is missing a San Diego Terminal Area Chart

You will find the San Diego Terminal Area Chart on the back of the Los Angeles Terminal Area Chart.

Instead of MegaScenery I am getting Blank Grey Tiles Over The Area That MegaScenery Covers

The very first volume of MegaScenery Volume 1: Southern California does only work in summer on both FAT32 (Windows 98/Me) and NTFS formatted hard drives out of the box. You can download a patch for Version 1.3 of Southern California which does correct this problem and enable MegaScenery to display all year round if your MegaScenery is installed on an NTFS formatted hard drive. If your system is Windows 98/Me or Windows XP with a FAT32 hard drive then you will need to ensure that you select Summer as your flying season. Volume 2 & Volume 3 and all future releases of MegaScenery display MegaScenery all year round on NTFS formatted systems right out of the box. NTFS is “usually” the default hard disk format on Windows XP systems.

MegaScenery New York also gives you winter snow textures so that if you are running Windows 98/Me then you can fly in both Winter and Summer with textures unique to both seasons.

When I install MegaScenery or MegaCITY I get a Window that gives me the Flight Simulator Version installation options for 2002 and 2004, I get radio buttons that I can select but there is no NEXT or CONTINUE button on the window and therefore I cannot complete the installation.

This is as a result of your Windows system running large fonts. The window where this dialog appears does not have a maximize button and neither all of the text nor the NEXT button will fit in that window. You need to abort the installation at this point, and change your Windows fonts to Normal Size and then reinstall the scenery.

To change your Windows fonts:

1. Right-click on your desktop
2. Select Properties => Settings=> Advanced=>General
3. Then change the Font Size DPI to Normal Size (96 DPI). After you complete the installation if you wish to go back to large fonts then you can do so.

When I put my Pacific Northwest Disk in the drive the installation doesn't run and the disk appears blank.

This issue tricks a surprizing number of people. MegaScenery Pacific Northwest is a DVD disk and not CD-ROM. It will therefore not work in a CD drive. You need to install it from a DVD drive.

When I fly MegaScenery or MegaCITY the scenery is blurry and high-res textures do not "kick-in" fast enough.

This is a combination of two issues.

Firstly, FS2004's scenery engine does not provide enough CPU priority to displaying scenery and is not tweakable. It is therefore important that you follow the Scenery Tips guide that is provided with your MegaScenery product. You'll find this under the launch icon's for the product in your Windows start menu.

The second and main cause is a poorly tuned computer system. Out of the box, Windows XP is not tuned for optimum performance. It does need tweaking which most users are unaware of. We have a document that we have put together that gives you 8 important Windows XP tweaks that will have your Computer system running beautifully for all applications and most importantly MegaScenery and MegaCITY titles. This document is exclusively available to MegaScenery customers and automatically
e-mailed to you when you purchase a MegaScenery/MegaCITY title or when you register one or more of your titles.
